Five Ways to Survive a Cold

So, while one of us is off boating around the country (not literally), the other one has been taken gravely ill with a cold. It seems as if that one of us cannot physically cope, function and stay healthy when the other is not around. Aw, sweet. However, I have chosen the best time to be ill as it means that when I don’t go out because I’m hovelled under a blanket on my settee feeling sorry for myself, I don’t miss any time seeing Scarlett. Awh, how cute.

So, anyway, the point of this post! My five ways to survive a cold. No everyone will always tell you to:

1. Drink plenty of fluids

2. Get plenty of sleep

3. Make sure you maintain a healthy diet

4. Get some fresh air every now and again.

5. Take the appropriate medicine when required and make sure that you always get everything out of your system by blowing your nose etc.

This is a good response as to how to beat a cold, but it’s also rather typical and broad, and little things that can actually help you big time, or what I believe, help you beat a cold even faster are not really thought of to include in this little mainstream list.

So here are mine:

This is my number one, most important, best way to get better quickly. They literally are a miracle where colds and fevers and any other associated illnesses are concerned. They’re fab. Anyone who is ever ill in my friendship group or family, and I have people to vouch for me, I tell them to drink a lemsip. I swear by them.

So what are they? They’re a mixture of ingredients, mainly paracetamol, that are in powder form and are concealed within a packet. You empty the contents into your favourite mug (I have a particular mug I use for lemsips) and then you fill the rest of the mug with boiling water. Stir, wait to appropriate temperature to drink, and the drink it. They unblock you and put you at ease for the next few hours before you can then have another one. Make sure you check the exact time on the packets.

My favourite are the ‘Beechems Cold&Flu Hot Blackcurrant’. You can either get 5 sachet packets or 10 sachet packets. However there’s other flavours such as a ‘Breathe Easy: Lemon’ or ‘All In One: Wild Berry and Hot Orange’. I have these two in my cupboards.

2. Have a really hot bath

If there is a time you are feeling particularly rough, then the answer is in the evening, have a really hot bath, just at the point where it may start to burn. There is one problem with this. The heat may make you feel light-headed, panicky, irritated, uneasy and short of breath. This is all part of it. However much added roughness it makes you feel, it’s worth it, as the result the next morning makes up for it. Just try and remain calm, relax, make sure a window is open, and take regular breaks, where you get out of the bath, and sit it a cool place for a couple of minutes before getting back in. Having a hot bath will help you sweat out all the ‘bad stuff’ and help clear your systems in you nose and head. When you wake up in the morning, you’ll feel a lot clearer and a lot better.

3. Have extra pillows at night

Now this totally contradicts what I have just said about the ‘have plenty of rest’. I absolutely hate sleeping when I have a cold. Lying down, and having my head not upright makes me, personally, feel even worse and I panic when I find I can’t breathe as easy. I become even more uneasy about sleeping because I find it difficult to go to sleep being so uncomfortably ill, and constantly wake up in the night struggling to breath, feeling clogged up, headaches, and the need to get up and blow my nose. (TIP: keep a bag and a box of tissues/loo roll next to your bed so you don’t have to keep getting up in the night). I then always feel horrible the next morning when I wake up. The mornings are often when I feel my roughest. To get past this, I recommend having at least three pillows, or using something that can prop you up and help you get to sleep. V-pillows are best (exactly how they find). You may wake up uncomfortable, but doing this is a god send with helping to fall asleep, as it keeps you head slightly upright, which keeps me from panicking as you feel as if you are upright.

4. Do not put anything on your face

People would often take this as do not put makeup on your face when you are ill and say that this is a typical way of dealing with a cold too. However, what I mean is anything. Do not put anything on your face. This includes make up, but it also means other things such as face cream, face masks, oil, whatever creams or lotions you may rub on your face. I usually use a moisturiser on my face, but tend to avoid using it when I’m ill as it makes me feel clogged up and this makes me feel irritated and panicky. Make up is also a no go, because that can make you feel stressed, as when you have a cold, your nose will run, you will constantly have to blow it, your eyes will water, your mouth will be dry, and you’ll feel as if you cannot do anything because you can’t touch your face in fear of messing up your makeup. It’s uncomfortable so I just wouldn’t bother. Putting Vaseline on the top and around the bottom of your nose to clear it is also something that is said you should do to unblock your nose, but this is also something I hate. You’re practically blocking it up even more!

5. Keep busy

I always find I can distract myself when I’m ill by keeping busy and not avoiding the jobs I need to do by using the excuse that I’m ill. It means that you can get some exercise and that you body gets some air and some movement and is not kept cooped up, which slims the chance of a fast recovery. Breathing different air in different rooms is good.

Sometimes work can make you feel even worse, but then once the work is done, you can have a good rest which means you can calm the roughness. It all ends up well anyway, you work, and then rest of recover. And jobs can get done too!

I want to also put here that looking forlorn and getting sympathy and things done for you is good to. But you will not always have someone there to look forlorn too, and get sympathy from and to do things for you. When you live on your own, or are on your own, you’ll have to do it yourself. So man up, and don’t let an illness stop you from being as fabulously alive as you were before.

So, until the need to write about surviving another minor illness:

Stay Safe, Stay Warm, Stay Hydrated and Stay Fabulous! (these will all help you survive a cold too!) 😀

The Return of a Fabulous Friend!

I would like to take this opportunity to welcome back Mr Jack Bradshaw to the country. He’s been away for practically a month in Thailand and he has been missed very much. Especially by me and Scarlett. We’ve been having serious withdrawal symptoms. Our group just doesn’t function as well without him. He completes our little family.

So I’m super duper happy that he’s back safe and sound. However, Scarlett has gone away on a boat trip for 10 days, so missed him coming back. Great timing (that was sarcasm). So she has to wait another ten days to see him. I want to laugh, but that’s unfair, so love and hugs Scarlett. I did send her some Snapchats of me and Jack together though to make her jealous. I’m really such an evil friend.

So welcome back Jack (from Laura as Scarlett hasn’t seen you yet). Hang on in there Scarlett! Have a lovely and safe trip 😀

So, I dedicate and address this to Scarlett:

Stay Safe, Stay Warm, Stay Hydrated and Stay Fabulous!

A Fabulous Holiday

This post comes from the cosy greatness that is my boat as I (Scarlett) am currently on spending the week on my narrow boat, Golden Sunset. After a HUGE dilemma with my dongles, we managed to get them up and running on my new laptop so that I can blog from anywhere! – My favourite spot is on the front of the boat next to Rosie and Jim.

So far on my boating adventures I have been from Shardlow to Burton to Llitchfield, to Fazeley, and to Tamworth – stopping off at places like Drayton Manor and the Snow Dome in between, not to mention a hell of a lot of shopping took place. I have only just got back from Ice Skating and with my aching ankles and calves i’m currently relaxing on the front of the boat with a Pick’N’Mix by my side chugging along the canal with just the sound of the countryside and the tapping of my keyboard and the wind blowing through my hair. Speaking of hair, one downside of the boat is that my hair dyer and straighteners don’t work here so i’m walking around with natural hair and being me that isn’t a preferred option. Despite that i’m actually having a really nice time with my parents and the nature is giving me a bit of a detox. Life couldn’t be better for me at the moment, great friends, lovely weather and of course my new laptop – not to mention my health.. I’m alive at least.

Events that are worth sharing:

  • Storm force 10 at Drayon Manor broke down while we were waiting and my parents still insisted that we were going on it, wasting about an hour of our time, when we eventually got on it, I got soaked head to foot and had to walk around looking like a drowned rat all day.
  • My Dad stole my mums onion rings at dinner today, now my mum wont shut up about it.
  • I fell over once at Ice Skating, and it was the only time my dad was filming, i’ll attempt to get the video uploaded eventually.
  • I’ve had a total of around 10 hours sleep because my parents both keep me up all night snoring.

So until the next time, I’ll carry on having a fabulous time!

Stay safe, stay warm, stay hydrated and Stay Fabulous!

Fifty Shades Of Us!

…well Fifty Facts About Us really.

We thought, well Laura did, Scarlett doesn’t know about this yet, that although we, well Scarlett has already done an ‘About Us’ page and a welcome post that has already given you an insight into the world of each of us, I thought some random, quirky facts wouldn’t go a miss either. So, the amount. Well it seems that as the blog is called ‘Fifty Shades of Fabulous’, it would only be right to then do fifty, quick, listed facts about each of us.

Laura: So here goes. I’ll try not to be typical in my facts, but I can’t promise anything. I like to be different but that’s not always the case. I don’t believe I am that interesting, so I think 50 random facts is going to be difficult, and I cannot guarantee that you will not fall asleep. I also don’t like sharing a lot about myself so this therefore makes this a near impossible task but here goes:

1. My name used to be Laura Hindle, it is now Laura Toher-Hindle. Speaking of names, I would like to call my first born: Coira Jane. The first name will be pronounced ‘Cora’, however I think names with ‘i’s’, ‘o’s’ and ‘a’s’ in look feminine and pretty. My brother thinks this is extremely stupid.  I think ‘u’s’ are ugly and masculine letters (I’m not saying males are ugly).

2. I like to be a mystery. Oooooooh. I hate the thought that I can be easily read. I also like to be different. I hate the thought that I’m the same as someone, and that my actions and what I say are typical of a 16 year old girl.

3. I don’t trust easily. May seem typical and common, but I seriously trust literally no one.

4. I have a phobia of my phone keyboard. It scares me and drives me to the point of extreme anger and frustration.

5.  I never reply…to anyone.

6. My nickname is ‘Ginge’.

7. I am not ginger.

8. I love films. I could literally live the rest of my life and do nothing but watch films. I tend to predict what’ll happen in everything I watch (which makes me feel great when it turns out to happen), and I analyse every detail. Thank you English for ruining my enjoyment of motion picture.

9. I am so lazy. I love to sleep. However doing nothing is really uncomfortable for me.

10. I am a perfectionist.

11. I never meet deadlines and I am always late. I’m so dis-organised and I do not prioritize at all.  I’m always behind. This is going to become my next rapid improvement.

12. I spend too much money on clothes. But this has slowed down a considerable amount in the recent months.

13. I am so dippy. I have zero common sense.

14. I am very self-conscious and insecure. So I struggle to describe myself as ‘Fabulous’ or any other associated word for this blog. I would rather be liked than disliked.

15. I love Greece. Mainly the island of Zakynthos. I love Greek food. It’s so fresh.

16. I’m often fond of change. But in some instances, I hate it.

17. I love random foods. I could sit and eat spoonfuls of mango chutney all day. However, I hate seafood and I hate mustard. Feed my any of those, knowing my dislike, I will instantly dislike you.

18. I mostly always, now, melt any chocolate I have and eat it that way. I also have an inability to eat sandwiches as sandwiches. I always dismantle them and eat all the pieces separately. My diet is so rubbish…so unhealthy.

19. I constantly drink either Orange juice, Apple juice, Cranberry or Cranberry and Raspberry juice. They’re great.

20. I am very independent. I love my own company. But I hate to be on my own in public.

21. I can never spell the words “associated”, “opportunity”, “separated” and “surprise”. I never know if it’s two ‘s’s’ or a ‘c’ in ‘associated’, I always use a ‘u’ instead of an ‘o’ in ‘opportunity’, I always put an ‘e’ in the place of the second ‘a’ because when you say the word it sounds like an ‘e’ should be there and I always forget the first ‘r’ in ‘surprise. The fact that I have managed to spell them all correctly here is a miracle. Thank goodness for red squiggly lines and spell-check.

22. People’s feelings are important to me, so I often feel very guilty and I often worry as to whether my actions will, if and how they may affect someone.

23. I am so sarcastic. This is not always picked up.

24. I have an awful laugh. If people don’t laugh at my jokes, I will laugh at them so that then people laugh at my laugh. I love to entertain, give surprises, make people laugh. I like it when people tell me that I make them happy. I love to have unique bonds with people.

25. I always aim for the highest and the best. I am not happy with anything less. People who don’t understand this irritate me.

26. I used to be a national level swimmer. I am currently a Level One Qualified Teacher of Aquatic Skill. You can probably tell I love sport. I love sport games and competitions. I love to win.

27. Studying will always be the most important aspect of my life right now.

28. I HATE walking. It’s so boring. The fact that I have to speed-walk everywhere because I’m always late is probably a contributing factor into why I don’t like it.

29. I am always ill somehow. It’s horrible.

30. I love bright colours and patterns. I don’t have a favourite colour or style.

31. I love having braces, just not when they hurt.

32.  I have enlarged adenoids. I also have tiny ears and am almost 110% certain I’m shrinking.

33. My eyes are so weak. I prefer sunglasses where you cannot see my eyes through the lenses.

34. I want to have many different careers in the future. I don’t want to do one thing with my life, I want to do many. I don’t want to be bored at any point in my life. Not being productive really irritates me.

35. I want to be remembered when I die. I would love to make an impact on the world. Like, finding a cure for cancer. I would love to do that.

36. I would love to be able to sing. I sing all the time. My shower head is great. And I would love to be able to street dance. I would also love to play the acoustic guitar and the piano, which I hope to learn one day.

37. I hate to cry in front of people. I also hate lying. I especially hate it when I know the truth and watch when someone else lies about it. I could never lie to my Mum.

38. I think the numbers 4, 8, 9, and 24, 48, 49 and 94 are very pretty numbers.

39. I love to read. I get lost in books. I can’t put them down sometimes, and read whenever I can in this state. Jodie Picoult is my favourite author right now.

40. I hate to lose anything. I hoard everything and find it very difficult to clear out.

41. I was so happy when I learned that one day I could magically click my fingers. I wish I could make sound effects with my mouth, like whistling, or making the ‘POP’ sound by pulling a finger along the cheek.

42. I love to take pictures. I believe nothing can be forgotten if I have a picture of it.

43. I get really irritated when people I love choose bad choices in life. Such as smoking. Or drugs.

44. I used to have a great memory. Now I’m forgetting a lot of things and this concerns me.
Subsection a. I always remember something when I’ve written it down even if I never look at it again. I have half a photographic memory according to my science teacher, so this may be the reason. Saying I only have half may look like I’m wishful thinking, attention seeking and only pretending, but I literally can remember sections of pages, or the appearance of a page and what’s written on it. Colour helps to enhance this.

45. I lose my temper very easily. I regret any actions immediately after I have committed them when I’m in a bad temper.

46. I will always apologise to people who I have upset, even when I may be in the right. I hate tension when I love the person who may have been upset by something I have done. I find it the most difficult to apologise to my brother. I don’t know why.

47. I have a brother. Me and my brother are very similar. Stick us in a group of 100 people, make us all laugh, and you will instantly know that we are related.

48. I have a filthy mind, sometimes. But, surprisingly after saying that, I’m quite innocent, and I don’t know what a lot of things means in relation.

49. I am terrified of paranormal beings. They petrify me. I am also terrified of the dark and most insects. I hide under my quilt at night because I believe nothing can touch me when I’m under it. I am also terrified of awkwardness. I’m also terrified of any form of commitment.

50. I am so very proud to be British. I have so many British flag possessions it’s unreal.

(additional fact for you: I hate the way I’ve had to set this out in order for it to be readable.)

It’s lovely to meet you all. 😀

Now it’s my part of the post and with not knowing who i actually am at the moment this will be quite hard for me. In addition to that, i’m not really that interesting to tell you the truth but i sure will have a go! I’ll try and make it as interesting as possible and avoid the typical ‘My Name is Scarlett, i am 16 from England’. I’ll go all out there with random facts about myself. I hope you enjoy!

  1. My absolute number one dream is to live in America – Idaho or Ohio.
  2. Not many people know that much about me – Laura is the person who knows me the most.
  3. I absolutely hate Facebook – but it’s one of the only ways i can talk to some of my friends so it’s needed.
  4. My favorite numbers are as follows: 8, 12, 24, 37 and 69 – My Least favorite number is 7.
  5. I absolutely love my cat – I have two cats, Buttons and Riley but Buttons is by far my favorite (Not that i should have a favorite)
  6. I love to walk – everywhere. I use public transport as little as possible and i will NEVER get in a taxi on my own, even if it means me having to walk for miles.
  7. I hate it when people copy my every move – which is an extremely bad trait of mine. It’s acceptable when it’s just one thing because then they don’t look like me, but when it’s literally every single thing i do – it gets on my nerves.
  8. My dream job would either be a Ghost Hunter or a Vintage cafe owner – Ghost Hunter so i could meet Zak Bagans and owning my own Vintage cafe has always been a dream of mine since i was a little girl.
  9. I love to walk down the street listening to ‘Superstition’ by Stevie Wonder – it makes me feel all sassy and because it’s the perfect speed i can walk in time to the music.
  10. I love photography – i’m not much good at it but i have a good eye apparently.
  11. I have moments in my life where i keep my room spotless for months – but then other times (Like now) I just get to my room at night, shove anything i have on the bed on the floor and go to sleep.
  12. I hate people who lie about everything just to try and impress people – i know way to many people like this and it’s funny because they think i can’t see past their lies.
  13. My nickname is ‘Red’ because clearly the name Scarlett means Red.
  14. (I’m stealing these off my other blog now because i can’t think of anything!) I have a phobia of submarines and sailors – or anything nautical for that matter. The thought of being trapped in the middle of no where, and the only way to safety would be swimming for miles terrifies me.
  15. I don’t get annoyed that easily but there are a few things which really annoy me and you’ll know if you do.
  16. I have total motivation changes all the time. Sometimes i’m motivated and want to be all productive and then other times i just want to lie in bed and do nothing at all.
  17. I dislike being around people for a long time unless they mean a lot to me, i can be quite temperamental. Similarly, i can’t handle commitment – which is going to suck in the future.
  18. I absolutely HATE change – i’d just love to stay in school for the rest of my life instead of changing things every couple of years. Maybe that’s because the future scares me.
  19. I don’t want to get married, the idea of marriage seems quite medieval to me. Plus like i just said i can’t handle commitment.
  20. I don’t want children either – because as we all know i really don’t like children. That’s because i get irritated easily by them. Ew.
  21. I’m perfectly happy being alone, until i get upset then i just want someone to cuddle me. – That’s why i have a cat.
  22. The saying ‘Never say Never’ baffles me.. i mean you just said never twice.. don’t be so contradictory…
  23. There are only about 3 people that i actually hate in the world – A teacher, an asshole and a bitch.
  24. I love it when people write status’ slagging me off and sprint screen my status’ and slag me off through them – it just goes to show that they’re the ones who can’t seem to let go and are clearly that bothered about me that they take time out of their day to try and annoy me.
  25. I love to dye my hair different colours (Clearly) but when i’m about to move on to a new colour i get too attached to my current hair colour and then don’t do it.
  26. Just past half way and i’m already disliking Laura for making me do this.
  27. I love to sit on my windowsill and listen to people argue on my street – its my free entertainment.
  28. The last time i did one of these was before i left school – not that much has changed to tell you the truth. Other than the fact that i’ve never been so bored in my life.
  29. I’d do anything to meet Zak Bagans – some one take me to him please? He’s my idol.
  30. To go to sleep the conditions have to be perfect – it has to be freezing cold, quiet and comfy enough for me to just snuggle up to my pillow and fall straight to sleep. (I also have to have no socks on)
  31. I never put more that two kisses on the end of messages, if you get more than you’re special or i want something.
  32. I hate people who misinterpret things and make me out to be the bad guy – as you can see on my person blog.
  33. My Bearded Dragon drives me mad, he is constantly trying to get out of his tank so i let him out and the tries to launch himself down the stairs.
  34. Similarly, my parrot is driving me absolutely insane.
  35. I have an obsession with anything sparkly – i’m like a magpie.
  36. My favourite colour is Orange but my favourite colour to wear is red.
  37. Storage Hunters has to be the most entertaining show ever.
  38. I have extremely strong opinions.. and that sometimes gets me into trouble. Something else that gets me into trouble is being over friendly.
  39. I don’t trust anyone – plain and simple.
  40. I doubt myself a hell of a lot – but then i just go for it anyway and try my very best.
  41. I should have been doing art since i left, and i’ve done absolutely none. Also, i should be doing piano practice and i haven’t done any of that either. Whoopsie.
  42. My family has a games room that we hardly ever use. Once at new years, once at halloween and any other parties we throw. However, i’m having friends round today and we’re having a movie night in my games room. Wins to be me.
  43. I can come across quite serious through texts, posts and messages but i’m actually a really bubbly person – not that it shows.
  44. I haven’t had my hair cut for about 3 years after my hair dresses cut my hair shoulder length after i said none off the length – my hair was down below my boobs. I think it might be a mild phobia of mine, whenever anyone even touches my hair i rage. However, my mum has had access to my hair recently to dye it.
  45. There’s always one person in my life who is on my case – as soon as one stops someone else comes to do it. Strangely enough, it’s usually the people who i treasure the most who turn against me.
  46. When people are paranoid or constantly moan at me for talking – i talk less just to make a point. Just another one of my bad traits being thrown out there.
  47. I’m so bad at keeping up with hollyoaks and when i watch the omnibus on sundays i get distracted so i never know whats cracking off. I don’t think i’ve watched it in over a month – i’m a bad person.
  48. I never take peoples advice which is one of my many down falls – however i get annoyed if people don’t take my advice.
  49. When i’m in my dad’s work van i feel superior to everyone because i’m higher. I’m like – ‘I’m looking down on you peasants’ but then i realise i’m the peasant because i’m rolling around in a work van.
  50. I’m so NOT proud to be British just to contrast Laura’s last post. I’m American at heart and i always have been. I’m just not meant to be English – that’s all it is.

I DID IT! I hope this little insight to how much of a boring person wasn’t too terrible for you to read. However, as proud as i am and no matter how much i’d just love to sit and admire my commitment to this i have to shoot off to get ready for my little get together tonight so farewell!

1. We both have an insanely random taste in music. The Sixth Letter, Backstreet Boys, Queen, Shakira, Little Mix. Scarlett’s Ipod is literally the saviour of our sanity.

2. We both have similar tastes in style. Pattern and vibrant colours are the way forward.

3. We tend to feel sad at the same time.

4. We seem to know what each other is thinking.

5. We have an undeniable respect for each other. And that is why we work.

If you have any quirky facts about yourself, please comment them below. We’d love to hear them!

A Fabulous New Addition!

So, the much awaited royal baby has arrived-welcome to the world ‘Prince of Cambridge’, and congratulations to both the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge-William and Katherine!

The royal baby born was born today at 4:24pm (what beautiful numbers to be born on), weighing 8lbs 6oz. And born on the hottest day of the year so far! Surely that’s a good omen, right?

I’m sure that posts like these will be in the hundreds, maybe thousands, tonight, so I’ll try and add a touch of fabulous-ness and difference to this one.

I imagine tonight, pretty much a very high percentage of Britain will be going crazy, and most of those people will probably be stood outside Buckingham Palace. I suppose it’s then quite lucky that there wasn’t a thunderstorm down there as there is up here in this little town I’m currently in. I imagine a storm on the night of the birth of the new Prince would also be something quite ominous, but let’s not think like that.

I must say my favourite part of the royal birth was definitely when the Queen joked about her impatience as to when the newborn would arrive. I remember watching her say the words “I do not really mind as to whether it is a boy or a girl, but I would very much like it to arrive. You see I’m going on holiday next week, and would very much like it to arrive before then”. I’m not sure about the latter of that statement, but I definitely think I heard the first part, and I must say, it was very amusing.

Over the past few months, I have often thought that Kate was not ready for motherhood. To me, she seemed to be this fragile, fresh figure of someone who was just getting settled into newly married royal life and with all it’s hectic-ness and public outings, and then BAM, she was pregnant just a year later. To many that may seem like a long time after being married to a royal to have the first child, but to me, it seems so very very soon. It almost looked like as if she was under pressure to give birth to an heir. But I’m sure that’s not the case, and being only 16 and not Kate herself, I’m sure that my view on everything surrounded with motherhood and when to have a child will be severely affected by my age, and therefore not contain the knowledge of the older and wiser, or the Duchess herself. I believe that when I see the first pictures of Kate and her new baby boy that all my views will change as I’ll see the pure happiness that only a mother can display after giving birth to someone she instantly falls in love with. Despite my beliefs that she wasn’t ready, with parents as great as hers, I’m sure Kate is going to be such a amazing, loving and devoted Mum, and that William will be an equally devoted, loving and amazing father, just as his own was, and be just as his mother was too: devoted, caring, loving and above all, the greatest protector of her children. They do make the perfect couple, so I am certain that they will make the perfect parents.

So, again, the biggest congratulations to the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge, and to the rest of the royal family. What a proud proud day for you all.

Now all we have left to craze about is what the baby shall be called and when the first pictures will appear. I’m sure that a lot of betting people will be sitting up and willing the name they placed a bet on to be shown on the screens of their constantly turned on televisions. To you I say, best of luck, I’m sure the odds are fantastic, as the amount of names that could be chosen is very very large.

Oh, and I’ll also be expecting my TV guide to be full of royal baby programmes and the history of royal babies documentaries to be filling every single slot. It’ll also be the perfect opportunity for those companies with existing stories of the story of Will and Kate, to again, show these again, with the addition of their new arrival, or any other programme with ‘royal’ in association, with the news of the addition to the royal family added in to make it relevant to the current society. I can’t even say I was shocked to see that just six hours later, there was already a programme named ‘The Royal Babies’ (I think). I’m sure that there may have already been many more before that. Five Fabulous TV Shows

For today’s post we thought that we’d write about 5 of our favorite TV shows – we thought doing 5 each would be a lot simpler and cause a lot less debating that trying to come up with 5 shows that we both love equally as much – so this is the outcome!:

Scarlett’s Top 5 TV Shows:

ghost-adventures_web-logo_476x268 1: Ghost Adventures

So if anyone out there reading this knows me, or even if you’ve been in my presence for more that 5 minutes you’ll know that i have a serious obsession for ghost adventures. Now ‘Ghost Adventures’ is an American ghost hunting show with Ghost Hunting being one of the things I would consider being when i’ve matured, Ghost Adventures and Zak Bagans has to be one of the biggest inspirations for me. Zak Bagans, the lead investigator is not only macho and wears tight tops – he saves dogs too, what more could you want? I know some of you’re out there are saying ‘It’s Fake!’  and i’m not going to sit here and tell you that you’re wrong because you’re most likely right. I understand that Zak, Aaron and Nick often will have to make up more exciting encounters just to keep their audience entertained but that doesn’t go to say that SOME of their evidence isn’t truthful. If you’d like to read more about what i think about Ghost Adventures, click here.

Doctor-Who-50th2. Doctor Who

With the 50th anniversary of Doctor Who coming up, it’s making me love it more and more – the tension of who will be the new Doctor is killing me but being a VERY big loving of Matt Smith i know that more than a few tears will be being shed this Christmas. The way that Doctor Who has something for everyone is magical – quirkiness, sadness, comedy and in some cases; romance. Doctor Who brings back memories from childhood for older views, and will without a doubt it’ll be something i can look back on from my future and remember it as an amazing show. However, despite my love for Doctor Who, i can’t regret the thoughts of it going down hill – the story lines are getting more complicated and in some cases it seems as if The Doctor is becoming more of a magician rather than a mad man with a box. – Regardless, i still love Doctor Who.

the-big-bang-053: The Big Bang Theory

The Big Bang Theory is spectacular – let me just get that out there straight away. Not many American shows about Geeky Scientists do it for me, but The Big Bang Theory certainly does. Every Single member of the cast is perfectly chosen – especially Sheldon. The main four, Sheldon, Lennard, Rahj and Howard and just so different it makes them such an amazingly formed quartette. Each one has their own qualities and developed stories which we are told about through out the series – My favorite is most definitely a tie between Sheldon and Rahj, Sheldon’s dominant presence is hilarious for someone of his mental capacity and Rahj’s Innocence and witty one-liners popped in here and there is just what makes them two so perfect. The women are also casted perfectly – Penny, Amy and Bernadette are so different but just so perfect for each of their partners. If you haven’t seen the Big Bang Theory yet, you need to get out of your little cave and check it out!

storagehunters4. Storage Hunters

Storage Hunters has increasing started to become a major part of most days – watching hours on end of the amazingly staged program. This is ANOTHER American show, about people bidding for ‘Bins’ of storage that people no longer want or access  – it’s so staged and fake it makes it absolutely hilarious to watch. The auctioneer Sean Kelly has the most annoying but brilliant voice it makes me giggle all the way through. Each bidder has their own little personalities and the on going hatred between Brandon and Lori Bernier and Jesse McClure is absolutely priceless. Sean’s nicknames for each of the bidders are also priceless – calling big black women ‘Queen Latifah’ and calling the lock gutter ‘Green Mile’. It’s just so obviously American, staged and practically amazing it’s unbelievable – you should all check it out, if not for the program it’s self and just the comedy value.

Come-Dine-with-Me-Logo5. Come Dine With Me

Come Dine with Me is a cookery program which, lets face it, is absolutely hilarious. The show has either four or five amateur chefs competing against each other hosting a dinner party for the other contestants. Each competitor then rates the host’s performance with the winner winning a £1,000 cash prize. Most of us have seen Come Dine With Me at one point of our lives – but what makes this tv show so amazing is DAVE LAMB. Dave Lamb is the comical genius who does the bitterly sarcastic commentary, ripping into each contestant one by one. His comments are amazing, because it’s just what everyone is thinking but they don’t have the guts to say it – but oh boy, Dave Lamb does.

Laura’s Top 5 TV Shows:

So I’m struggling with how to rank mine so as most television competitions do I shall announce them in no particular order:

My Favourite TV Show (probably of all time):

                                                UGLY BETTY

UB Single Page KeyArt_SplitScreen.indd

This has to be one of the greatest TV shows that has ever been created, and I am so so upset that it got cancelled after just four series. I couldn’t understand why such a good show could just end. I couldn’t understand why people could not like this show…hold up, actually I can, even I got frustrated at times when all I wanted to know was just that little week. But that is exactly what makes a good TV show, right? If you are literally on the verge of throwing yourself off the cliff to find the hanger, then the company producing the show and the writers are doing something right. Having viewers craving to know more and more keeps them eager, keeps them keen, and keeps them watching, which is the aim. This was definitely plentiful in Ugly Betty. The cliffhangers they left us with were just unfair. Especially the ones at the end of each series that we then had to wait for an ENTIRE new series to find the answer to. However being a master con artist, actually no, I don’t think that is relevant, I found away around this. After not watching the show for a period of time (god knows why) me and my mother (also a huge fan) decided to buybit extra that would make the whole thing make sense but darn I had to wait til next the complete box set on Amazon, and spent many many days and nights sitting and watching episode after episode until we could leave the story in a place where we weren’t going to claw our eyes out to know the next bit. THAT was a hugely difficult task. I think we decide an honour for managing to find a situation at the end of an episode where we could cope with leaving it til the next day.

ugly-betty-season-3-ugly-betty-7460438-1024-768So the plot? It was so varied and was always changing so I could possibly not explain it to you. It basically teaches the story of a young girl, and how she becomes a success through her own ways and by not conforming to the world of vanity and beauty. It teaches of inner beauty, and I truly believe that that is the constant theme and the constant message throughout the show. The idea is that Betty is ‘ugly’ when she first comes onto our screens, but I’ve always strongly thought and believed that she couldn’t look more beautiful as she did in her first appearances in Season 1. All I would be able to say is just buy the box set (it’s not that expensive at all!) and watch every single episode and you’ll be able to understand why I am so hooked.

The characters were just so brilliant, so perfectly cast, so full of charisma and just so talented. There are simply too many to name, but each individually communicate their own individual message to the audience about who they are. I personally learned a message from all of them, and they each taught me something, an important life message, which I am so grateful to the show and the actors/actresses for creating characters that the audience could so easily connect with.

This is a show that can make you laugh, it can make you cry, it can frustrate you and it can make you the happiest person alive. I found that after watching episodes I began to actually become the characters that I watched on screen, especially Amanda. Sassy, sexy and with one hell of an attitude, I found myself saying the things that she would say and adopting her ‘no-care’ attitude. This was followed closely by the character of Betty, as I immediately found myself with the ability to give so many more ‘pep’ talks. You can seriously connect with the show at a more emotional level. It’s not like a typical American show. It’s creative, it’s effortlessly fantastic, and the talent behind it is phenomenal…and that’s what makes it so different, unique and just so brilliant.

After finishing the box set, I was left saddened and unsatisfied at the ending. It all seemed too rushed and too quick, as opposed to the length of the story lines that had taken part in the four series. The network and writers had attempted to bring closure to all individual stories of the fourth series, but left me with so many questions. So this is when I made my decision to spend my days campaigning to find out more. And I did! I found a literature version of a Season 5 of Ugly Betty and I could not contain my joy! I originally thought this was the actual genuine Season 5, but then realised it was something created by fans, namely a organisation called ‘The Bachelor and Butterfly Committee’. This disheartened me slightly, but when I started reading, it shocked me to find that it was as if the actual writers had written it. The plot and the stories were so similar in style to how the ones of the TV Show were portrayed and the ideas were in such a similar style and portrayed in such a similar way to that of the show.  I could actually imagine the scenes unraveling in my mind, and it was so wonderful to have a glimpse of Ugly Betty being alive again, for me. If there are any fans of Ugly Betty out there, who felt they had many questions at the end of the series, you can find a version of Season Five here: This Season Five focuses a lot on Daniel and Betty and portrays what happens to them once they both end up in each others company in England. So for any ‘Detty’ fans out there, these literature episodes are definitely for you! Most of my questions were centered around Daniel and Betty and I personally wanted to see them as a couple (although some people took to the Internet to write articles as to why they’re so not right for each other, which I never understood) so this was perfect for me.

200px-UglyBetty_S1-1-The Committee promised a full 26 episode series, however, are only on Chapter 14, and we’ve been waiting a long time for anything new to be added, so I was very sad when I saw that it had not been updated for a while and finally thought I may have to just learn to survive without Ugly Betty being a part of my life any more.

But I couldn’t do it. I wanted to see more. I wanted more Ugly Betty to be made, and after searching through social networks, discovered that many other people did too. So I was on a mission, and determined to get in touch with the writer. It may seem silly to some, like, how would I make a difference? But I thought better to try and to know, than to never try and to never know what may happen. Starting my research,  I become slowly more disheartened as I read critical reviews and bad press on the show. But watching videos of the characters and how much they would love for the show to continue, and reading comments on blogs about how much the public wanted it back, and my own personal desire kept me going. I gathered a lot of research, found contact details, came up with alternate ideas such as just a series for DVD if it could not get the air time, or just a movie, which had been rumoured to be in talks of being created and began to draft my letter. Unfortunately, school began, GCSE Year 11, and I couldn’t afford to spend any more time on my mission. I had to leave it unfinished, and focus of my studies. However, now starting this blog, and having the ability to communicate with a large community of people, I am determined to finish what I started.

If you want to see Ugly Betty back, please contact me through the comments below or on our Facebook page which you can find in the bar to the right. I would love to find other people that feel the same as me about this fantastic show and would love to bring it back. I know I can’t be the only one.

I do agree with Scarlett on ‘Doctor Who’. I love this show, but I always struggled to understand some of the story lines which I always have to interrupt the show to ask about and getting into the show once there was a new Doctor. I started watching Doctor Who when Christopher Eccleston began as the Doctor and I loved every single minute of it. This was my reasoning behind why I then swore loyalty to Mr Eccleston and swore never to watch the new series of Doctor Who because of the fact he was no longer in it and I believed the show would never be as good without him. I refused to accept David Tennant. However, I did start the watch the new series as it had become something of a family tradition with my Dad and brother. After a short amount of time, I had fallen in love with David Tennant as Doctor Who. His craziness, wacky style sense and pure talent to entertain hooked me instantly and I was drawn in to this new world of Doctor Who with David Tennant. However my ability to understand and grasp some of the story lines didn’t change, so didn’t improve. But with David Tennant as the Doctor, it didn’t matter. My biggest apologies to Christopher Eccleston (who became a very very close second) but David Tennant did become my all time favourite doctor.

So it was my utter delight that David Tennant remained as the Doctor for three series and eight specials. However, when this ended, I was utterly distraught and again, I swore loyalty to Mr Tennant, and refused to watch the next series. Due to family circumstances, I did stick by my oath, and I didn’t begin to watch the new series with Matt Smith, already certain I would neither like him, or the new adventures.

Scarlett, on the other hand, fell in love with Matt Smith and she has hundreds of photos of him and the Doctor Who series plastered all over her walls. I saw snippets of the series including Karen Gillan (Amy Pond) but did not generally follow them up to watch properly. I eventually did come to watch the series properly, but this began when Jenna-Louise Coleman started on the show, and I was so upset I had not watched it sooner. Although David Tennant still remains by favourite Doctor of all time, Matt Smith fell in at second place, cosying up to Christopher Eccleston. I loved the series, and I loved Matt Smith (his craziness just continued from that of David Tennant effortlessly and amazingly-they shared the same energy and the same passion) and I loved his companion, Clara Oswald (what a sassy one she is! :-)) . I just fell in love with the show again, but it seems this series was so short, which is really upsetting. However watching all the episodes on record, it meant I now don’t have to wait as long for November to see a new episode and series! And guess what?! I finally began to understand the story lines which is a miracle in itself. So I thank each and every one of the people behind the scenes at Doctor Who for helping me to do that.

Rumours of David Tennant returning have also made me very excited, so I wait eagerly for November and the Christmas special! 😀

I also like both ‘Come Dine With Me’ and the ‘Big Bang Theory’ but they are not in my Top 5. I also really enjoyed the one episode of  ‘Ghost Adventures’ that I watched during a PD lesson at school. I enjoy all kinds of TV shows very much, it’s so unfortunate that I can’t list them all! 😦

Scarlett’s Candy Crush Addiction

Candy Crush Saga is a variation of match-three games such as Bejeweled. Each level has a game board filled with differently colored candies, and might contain obstacles. The basic move of this game is horizontally or vertically swapping the positions of two adjacent candies, to create sets of three (or more) candies of the same color. Having been a HUGE fan of Bejeweled as a kid I thought i’d download it one day and i’ve never looked back! No only does it entertain me for hours on end, it’s a great way to have little competitions with friends to get to highest level.

Being a free game, Candy Crush already has a wider audience than most games in the app store – it is the highest-grossing app in the Apple and Google app stores, not to mention the most popular app on Facebook: So clearly it’s pretty damn popular! Candy Crush Saga is played more than 600 million times a day and is reportedly bringing in hundreds of millions of dollars to King, the creators of Candy Crush Saga.

So why is Candy Crush Saga so addictive?Candy-Crush-Addict

  • Ease of access: With Candy Crush being everywhere; your phone, laptop, iPod, iPad etc it never leaves you alone – it’s always there where ever you look so it’s usually just force of habit to play (Especially to me) and it’s so easy to just pick up where you left off.
  • Random Rewards: With Random Rewards coming up most of the time, it’s hard to stop playing the game until you get to that milestone – and usually it’s a lot further than you think – Like Las Vegas shot machines. “People keep responding in the absence of reinforcement hoping that another reward is just around the corner,” says Mark Griffiths, director of the International Gaming Research Unit at the psychology department of Nottingham Trent University.
  • Competition: With most of my Facebook friends, it’s hard to stop playing in case of falling behind others – It’s always great to be number one in something, even when it’s just a silly little game like Candy Crush! Wherever you play it you can connect to Facebook so you can constantly check up on who is beating you and who isn’t.
  • Withdrawal: Because of the lives system, there are periods of time where you can’t play causing withdrawal symptoms for many players. It’s half an hour to wait for one life, so when you’re so close to finishing a section/zone it’s so tempting to buy new lives or sit by your phone for that half an hour just to wait for that one life.

For me, Candy Crush is just plain addictive because I have nothing better to do with my spare time! One little annoyance though – I got up to nearly level 100 and my iPod crashed so i had to reset it: Possibly the most heart breaking moment of my life.

We’d love to hear about your Candy Crush Saga addiction stories! Get in touch with us through Facebook or Comment down below!
